Most folks hope to stay as healthy as they can for as long as possible. There isn't any shame in this. It is why we work out. Most of us have learned which foods to eat to have a balanced diet full of health-giving foods. This is the reason we keep a bottle of pure water handy throughout our day. We know we need to do these things to stay healthy day to day.

Nevertheless, do you think we are protected enough to get us through the cold and flu season unscathed? What can we do if our co-workers insist on coming to work with their various ills and we don't want to become sick? Well, there is an answer. At times like this it helps to know how to power-up your immune system. Here are some foods you can eat to do just that.

Do you regularly eat Brazil Nuts? You should try them! They are loaded with selenium. If you want a good source of selenium, Brazil Nuts are considered one of the best. Cell deterioration is caused by free radicals and selenium protects your cells. Infections, heart disease, and cancer are also conditions that selenium can protect you against. Your gut is susceptible to a very invasive bacteria and selenium can protect you against it. Brazil Nuts are easy to add to foods while you cook. Toss a handful into your salad for a great tasting protein boost. Brazil Nuts taste great when eaten on their own.

T-cells are a white blood cells called lymphocytes and are part of the immune system. If you have an adequate zinc intake, your T-cells are activated and make your immune system stronger. The amount of zinc - 17 milligrams - supplied in just 100 grams of wheat germ is more than enough to boost your immune system. Wheat germ is so adaptable it can be added to many dishes you prepare. The simplest way to get wheat germ in your body is to sprinkle it over whatever you are eating. Wheat germ has a nice, delicate taste and enhances anything it is mixed with or sprinkled on. If you want to be healthy and have a super powered immune system, you need to be drinking tea. A lot of information has been written about the necessity of drinking sufficient quantities of pure water in order to maintain your health. Your T cells need interferon to maintain their optimum health. Scientific test have concluded that if you drink 20 ounces of tea each and every day, your level of interferon will increase. When you have adequate interferon, it is able to protect your T Cells whenever you are attacked by germs and bacteria. If you can, drink herbal teas, as they include other nutrients that are beneficial to your health. However, any tea will work just as well.

Vitamin C doesn't survive well when it's exposed to the cooking process. It's pretty easy to understand why eating your kale raw is the better choice, right? You already know that vitamin C is best for your immune system, so make sure you eat raw kale at least once a week to keep your immune system strong.

Salmon has been touted as one of the great superfoods for many reasons. One of the benefits of eating salmon is its ability to optimize your immune system. Salmon has a plentiful supply of omega-3 fatty acids and is high in protein - two components needed to keep your overall health high. Your muscles enlarge when you eat enough protein and, when they are strong, your body is more prepared to fight illness. There are bacteria and germs that invade our body and cause illness. Omega-3s fight these invaders to protect our health from Omega-6s. Plan your weekly menus so you can have salmon for two meals a week. The recommendation, however, is three fish meals weekly, but sometimes this is hard to do if you're not a big fan of salmon.
