I sometimes hear from would be dieters who are trying to gauge for how long they would need to be on the Nutrisystem diet in order to lose a certain amount of weight. Sometimes, this amount of weight is relatively small and under around 20 pounds. Other times, it is much more. I recently heard from someone who wanted to lose around 75 pounds and wanted to know if she would be able to accomplish this within a six to seven month time frame. She had hoped to start the plan in January and to lose the 75 pounds by a summer getaway she had planned.
This was certainly not out of the question. Clinical studies show an average 2-3 pounds weight loss on Nutrisystem. I have some theories as to why some people lose more weight than others. But, putting that aside, if you take the median of this and assume a 2.5 weekly weight loss, that is 10 pounds a month, which means that losing 75 pounds would be roughly 7 and a half months, if you were in the middle of the range. This may be a little longer than she was hoping for, but she could always be very careful with her side items (which you add in with every meal) in the hopes of quicker results. By being careful, I mean that you need to make sure that anything you add to the diet is low in carbohydrates or low on the glycemic scale. This ensures that you are burning fat instead of carbohydrates. You could also commit to an exercise regimen. In my observation and experience, even adding in the additional calorie burn a daily brisk walk makes a little difference in the speed with which you lose the weight.
Another observation that I can make is that sometimes, the people who start out with quite a bit of weight to lose shed the pounds more quickly than those who only need to lose small amounts. I've noticed that people who are losing a higher percentage of their body weight tend to have a relatively easier time losing weight relatively quickly, especially at first. For example, someone who starts out at 320 pounds and wants to lose 75 pounds may well lose weight at a slightly faster clip than someone who starts out at 210 and wants to lose 75 pounds. This is just my own observation. It's by no means scientific, it's just what I have seen and I certainly don't want to imply that if you're only trying to lose a relatively small percentage of your body weight, that the weight can't come off steadily or quickly.
So to answer the question posed, if you stay within clinical study ranges and figure on an average a 2-3 pounds weekly weight loss, you're looking at anywhere from 5 1/2 months to 9 1/2 months to lose 75 pounds, with 7 1/2 months being the mean. Of course with all averages like this, some people do a little better and some do a little worse. I honestly think that being careful with your additions and the amount that you move can help you reach the upper range, but I also know people who did neither who were happy with their results.
