Show Your Support With The Best Cheerleading Uniforms

By Gabrielle Lambert

In order to encourage school spirit in sports, cheerleaders were introduced. These were female athletes that would be grouped into three or more groups that would encourage the crowd to go wild with their cheers. They cheer and encourage the sportsmen that are playing in their various sports. It was meant to give the sportsmen motivation to do well while they were playing. Over the previous century, cheerleading uniforms have been distinguishable for their flirty and cheerful appearance. Like many other things, they have evolved over time.

Soon when this sport became an activity for girls they would wear garb that was a symbol of the institutions that they represented. The most common garb that was worn was a long sleeve cardigan sweater with buttons worn over a turtle neck shirt or collared blouse. The letters that represented the institution that these cheerleaders represented would form the shape of a megaphone which is still a common shape these days.

As time progressed, the skirts would become shorter and the cardigans would become shorter and closer fitting. During the 1950's and 1960's, the long ankle length skirt was chopped into half so that it came to the knee. The girls would wear sneakers or saddle shoes so that they could perform athletic dances and tricks during their routines.

The cardigan sweater became shorter and closer fitting so that it would not overlap with the skirt. The school logos became more prominent as colors were introduced. The cardigan became a round neck or a turtle neck sweater and the sleeves were shortened.

Today the garb that is worn by cheerleaders is made with a combination of polyester and spandex fabric. The shell, top, fits closely to the body and is either sleeveless or long sleeved. Most ladies will wear a bodysuit under the shell vest and the short skirt. The bodysuit is either a leotard type costume or it comes to the rib cage depending on the style of the garb. As per the National Federation of High Schools the regulations state that the shell vest reaches the waist for modesty when the arms of the cheerleaders are at their sides.

The skirt is a customized skirt which is made from the same material as the top. IT can have various styles. Many skirts are made with pleats or in a simple A-Line fashion which has no pleats. The general rule around the length of the skirt is that it comes to mid-thigh or where the fingers of the cheerleader stop when her arm is at her side.

The skirts are as short as 13 inches long. If the cheerleader is in high school there are stringent regulations in terms of the length of the shell also known as the vest. This can be worn over a form fitting body suit which is can be long sleeved and a turtle neck.

As the sport has become more and more competitive, the regulations around dress are stringent however; in some cases the garb can expose a bit of skin. In the case of all-star cheerleaders, they are allowed to have shell vests that expose the midriff entirely. Cheerleading uniforms are striking with their bright colors and short skirts. They are also entirely unique and made with the colors of each school.
