How Much Weight Do You Lose on Medifast Per Week?

I get a lot of questions asking about specific weekly weight loss with the Medifast diet. Very often, folks have a definite goal in mind and want to know how long it's going to take them to get there. For example, I had someone who wanted to lose 50 pounds and she wanted to know how many pounds she could expect to lose each week. From this estimate, she was going to figure out how long it should take her to reach this goal. I'll examine this more in the following article.


How Many Pounds Can You Expect To Lose Each Week On Medifast?: Well, that depends upon a few things. The company states that typical results are around 2-5 pounds for the first couple of weeks and 1 - 2 pounds after that. But you can't expect to have the same loss each and every week.
The truth is, very few people lose exactly the same amount of pounds each time. Usually, if you have one bad turn this time, you'll lose more the next time. But, there are some things that separate the 2 pound folks from those that do a bit better. Before I get into this though, I want to explain the mechanism which makes this diet work well and quickly.

It's Not Only The Calories In The Medifast Diet, It's The Carbs And Protein Too: Admittedly on the one hand Medifast is your typical low calorie diet. Your taking in anywhere from 900 -1100 calories per day, which is bound to take off some weight as most people will burn much more than this just from every day life. But, what really sheds the pounds pretty quickly is the low amount of carbohydrates and the high amount of protein in the foods.

If you've spent any time considering or researching low carb diets like Atkins or South Beach, you probably know about ketosis. This is the mechanism where your body begins to burn fat rapidly. If you eat the foods that you are given, you should get to this place in around three days. But, there's another piece of the puzzle. And that lies with what you consume for your lean and green meal.

How The Lean And Green Meal Fits Into This: Once per day, the company asks you to prepare a fresh, larger meal. They call this the "lean and green" but what this really means is that you're being asked to eat an additional 5 - 7 ounces of lean protein (this is the post cooked weight) and three servings of vegetables. Easy enough, right? But here's the thing. All vegetables are not created equal. Some are much higher in carbs than others. And, remember ketosis? You don't want to do anything that's going to slow or stop this process.

So, when it's time to prepare your lean and green, chose veggies that are lower on the glycemic scale. For example, corn and sweet peas are going to be much higher in carbohydrates than tomatoes, lettuce, mushrooms or asparagus. There are plenty of friendly vegetables out there. You only need to educate yourself as to which ones are better choices.

I'm sometimes asked about skipping the lean and green to avoid these concerns all together. Believe me when I say that you don't want to do this. You need to take in enough calories and energy for ketosis to take place. If you don't you'll kick yourself out anyway. It's just not worth it.

More Considerations: Another thing to think about is how much you've moving. You don't need to spend all your time at the gym and you don't want to over do it. But you can exercise on Medifast after the first few weeks. It's just recommended that you stick to moderate rather than vigorous activity. Walking with some speed, biking, or rollerblading are all ways to spend time with your family while burning a few more calories and giving your body a leaner, stronger appearance.

So, let's go back to the 50 pounds example. I'll just use averages to make things easier. At 3 pounds weekly for the first couple of weeks and 1.5 pounds on average after that, it would take around five months, but that is using the average. As I said, you can certainly differ from week to week.
