Realistic Weight Loss Goals Per Week - How Much Weight Can You Lose Each and Every Week?

What are realistic weight loss goals per week? Many people understandably want to lose as much weight as possible but what is the maximum amount that a person can reliably and realistically lose per week? In this article, I will tell you first how weight loss is achieved followed by the theoretical maximum and finally the most realistic goal that you should be aiming for.

Difference Between In And Out

You only lose weight (fat reserves) when your body needs to resort to them. If you are eating the same amount of energy that is burned by your body carrying itself around then nothing will change.
However, if you eat less than is burned up then you will lose weight. This can happen if you eat less food or if you burn more energy i.e. additional exercise compared to your present situation.

Maximum Loss Per Week

A deficit of around 1,000 calories per day is pretty much the maximum that anyone can tolerate and this should only be done for short periods. This will give a weight loss per week of two pounds (around a kilo). You should never try to lose more weight than this.

Realistic Weight Loss Per Week

The maximum mentioned above is not sustainable in the long term. If you are overweight by 20 pounds or more then I don't recommend it.

Instead, you should opt for a more realistic 500 calorie daily deficit which will lead to a weekly weight loss of one pound.

One pound might not sound like much but the above deficit will not require a huge change to your lifestyle and it will allow you to lose over 25 pounds after half a year. Think about how quickly the last six months have gone by. In the same amount of time from now, you could be 25 lbs lighter if you commit now to losing the weight.
