What Constitutes a Weight Loss Diet?

What should a weight loss diet consist of? In a very basic and fundamental sense, you'd want a diet that is healthy that will have you consuming fewer calories than you burn off, thereby losing weight.

OK then, but what should a healthy diet consist of? Well firstly you have the portions of fruit and vegetables every day. You should aim for between 5 and 10. If these seem daunting then consider the following:

A glass of freshly squeezed juice with breakfast is one, 2 pieces of fruit with your lunch would be 2 more and a couple of portions with your dinner would be 5 already. Even if you don't like fruits like apples and bananas, then, with the array of fruits and vegetables available, you will surely be able to find something to your taste.

And in case you're wondering, 2 glasses of the same fruit juice would not constitute 2 portions, I'm afraid! The reason being that it is the same fruit and your body is getting the same use out of the nutrients. If you had a different fruit juice, your body would get a different set of nutrients.

You should get a mixture of grain, dairy products, meats (or equivalents if you're vegetarian), fruit and vegetables (as touched upon above) and foods containing fats and sugars in moderation.

A balance of these is essential to get a good all round weight loss diet. Don't think that just by cutting down on calories completely you can lose weight, this is a bad idea. Your body still needs calories to function for energy and thus, if you were to cut down to the extreme, you would become tired and disheartened by your weight loss efforts.

A weight loss diet should be complemented by a weight loss exercise regimen. You could go for a run or go swimming. If you have never exercise before, start up slowly and do more exercise as you get more confidence as your ability to do more increases.

You could start by cycling to work instead of the bus, for example. This would get you exercise and save you money at the same time. Take the stairs instead of the elevator when going up several floors in the building. Even if it's only going up one floor, you could make it a game and try to beat the elevator if you're quick enough.
