Basic Information On Clodronate Liposome

By Kendra Ware

To have an understanding of how clodronate liposome works, you should know a little about cells and how they work in the body. Liposomes are tiny vesicles in the body that hold water compartments with lots of lipids in each. The macrophages are the original building blocks of your immune system. A liposome can be changed so that it also changes how your macrophages work against disease.

Clodronates are in a class of drugs called biophosphates. They can keep your bones from taking on the possibility of a secondary cancer. This is a cancer that comes from another primary site, and is a different kind of cancer than the primary that metastasized.

When a secondary cancer attacks a bone, it makes it structurally weak and steals the calcium away therefore pushing it into the blood to be released from the body which is called hypercalcemia. This can make you very confused, upset and nauseous. The medication can help to deal with this by simply keeping your calcium levels normal.

Osteoblasts and osteoclasts are two kinds of cells that keep your bones healthy by helping to rebuild them. Some kinds of cancers will put off chemicals that cause osteoclasts to become severely overworked and allows the bones to get weak. The medication goes right to the areas that are becoming weak due to this activity.

It makes the cells react as they would in a normal, healthy person so that the cancer cannot spread and get into other healthy cells. In this manner, you keep calcium where it belongs so that the bones are healthy enough to fight away any new cancer cells. People with primary or secondary bone cancers could find help with this kind of treatment, so it is a possibility to discuss with your physician and oncologist.

Pills are available to be taken up to twice daily without food. It should not be taken inside of a two hour window with any other medications or food of any kind including milk products. This could cause the drug to not fully be absorbed and therefore make it work at less than an optimal level in the blood.

There are side effects associated with this treatment including diarrhea, nauseousness and low calcium levels called hypocalcemia. This could make your lips or even tongue tingle but is rare for this treatment. Your kidney function could drop, and a condition called osteonecrosis has been seen. This means that the bones and tissues of the mouth and jaw get damaged and die off. To keep this from happening, your doctor will suggest a dental work up and you should care for your mouth and teeth daily, so make sure to tell your dentist you are on this medication.

The clodronate liposome therapy is also called by other drug names. Your physician can go into more detail about how it works and how long you could take the therapy, and this will be based on your condition. Some people will not be able to take the medication. You should speak with your doctor about if this drug could be right for you.
